GEMSTONE ARTISANAL MINERS
Mositunya Gems believes that the gemstone sector is a vital tool for poverty alleviation and with the right structures can garner massive value to the livelihoods and regions where gemstones are found.
The global Artisanal and Small-Scale Miners (ASM) produced 80% of colored gemstones that we consume in jewelry. ASM are active on every continent except Antarctica. In developed countries ASM has an organized well-run value chain and is able to generate equitable income for their stakeholders.
Sub-Saharan Africa holds the largest number of Artisanal Small-scale miners at an estimated 10 million, however ASM is fragmented and disorganized and miners gain very little of value from their efforts. Not only do the artisanal miners lose but the entire ecosystem is threatened from misuse. The disorganized nature of ASM practices can create stress to the environment resulting in habitat loss, wildlife species population decline, mass deforestation, poor water quality and threats to human health.
To mitigate these effects Mositunya Gems works at various collaborations through ZAVARA to ensure the integrity of the Biodiversity in the regions our gemstones are sourced is maintained. To learn more about ZAVARA click here.
